Design Team appointed for the Ardhowen refurbishment project.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has taken an important step forward in the refurbishment of the Ardhowen Theatre with the appointment of a collaborative design team led by Hall McKnight Architects.
The appointment of the design team will advance the refurbishment plans for the much loved 36 year old, grade B+ listed building alongside enhancements to its outdoor environs.
The refurbishment project aims to enhance the visitor experience, improve accessibility and inclusivity, provide new opportunities for artists and audiences, ensure the facility meets the future needs of the local community, and create a more environmentally sustainable venue.
Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cllr Barry McElduff said:
“I am delighted that the Design Team has been appointed to commence the refurbishment works at the Ardhowen Theatre.
The Ardhowen has been such an iconic building on the shores of Lough Erne for 36 years. A very important aspect of our physical and cultural landscape.
The Ardhowen is a major hub for the arts throughout County Fermanagh, the wider Council area, and beyond. It provides a space for the local community and visitors to access and enjoy quality arts and cultural experiences.
The Council is committed to providing access to arts, culture, and heritage for residents and visitors. They are important elements of community life and key social and economic drivers.
The refurbishment of the Ardhowen will enhance the opportunities to enjoy the arts today and in the future.”
The award-winning architect’s team has considerable experience across a wide range of complex projects including theatres, heritage and cultural projects, and landscape design.
Speaking about their appointment Ian McKnight from Hall McKnight Architects said:
“We look forward to working with the Council and the local community to bring forward proposals for the Ardhowen that provide some new facilities and improve the visitor experience, access and sustainability of the building whilst retaining the existing character. The Ardhowen is a true original and is one of the very few listed buildings from the 1980’s, so we are delighted to have been appointed, along with our full design team, and hope to deliver a project that allows the Ardhowen to continue its important role in the civic, social and cultural life of the town and region for years to come.”
As part of the design process, the project team will be engaging with stakeholders to bring forward high-level design options for the venue. It is anticipated that this phase of the project will be completed by March 2023.
The project is part of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Capital Investment Programme which aims to deliver a range of strategic projects to make the district a better place to live, work, visit and invest in.
