Throughout the summer, visitors to Devenish Island have been met by members of The Devenish Island Ambassador programme. This initiative, which runs until 19 September, offers free guided tours by local ambassadors for those arriving on the island between 11am and 6pm. Overseen by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and supported by Department for Communities Historic Environment Division, the programme, now in it’s third year, is designed to improve visitor experience and provide a deeper, more meaningful connection to the island.

Each ambassador is a local resident with a love for Devenish Island and a wealth of knowledge about its history, flora, and fauna. They are eager to share their passion with visitors, offering personalised tours that cater to individual interests. Whether visitors are history buffs, nature enthusiasts, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the ambassador will ensure a memorable and informative experience.

Devenish Island is a historic island located in Lower Lough Erne, in Fermanagh’s lakelands. The island is renowned for its early Christian monastic site, which dates back to the 6th century. Key features include a perfectly preserved round tower, several church ruins, and stunning views of the surrounding lake and countryside.

Vice Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Elaine Brough attended the official launch and expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative;

‘’Devenish Island is one of Fermanagh’s most iconic and historically rich sites and I am delighted that visitors to the island can now avail of this welcome ambassador programme and access complimentary guided tours.

Fermanagh and Omagh District council is committed to valuing and enriching our heritage and making accessible the rich, diverse, natural, built and cultural heritage of our district. This offering, supported by our partners, Department for Communities Historic Environment Division demonstrates how the Council is actively working towards this. Not only does it enhance the visitor experience, but it also supports the local community by promoting the islands cultural heritage.

From the ancient monastic site and its well-preserved round tower to the enchanting lakeside views, visitors will gain insider insights into the island’s storied past and cultural significance. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity before the programme concludes in mid September.”

Paul Price, Director of Department for Communities Historic Environment Division, said
“I am delighted that the Devenish Ambassador Scheme has successfully launched with an Ambassador operating the visitor facilities on the island. Devenish Island is a truly special place and the Department for Communities is committed to preserving our historic sites and making them available to local and International tourists.”

The initiative is available to all visitors arriving on Devenish Island from 11am – 6pm. No prior booking is required. Toilet facilities are available and are opened by the welcome ambassador on duty each morning. Access to Devenish Island is by water craft with various options available from hiring a kayak or day boat, or purchasing a Pilgrim Pass from Enniskillen Castle.
