Altanagh Excavations Artefacts Event (1)

On Friday 29 September 2023, an event was hosted by Termonmaguirc Historical Society to mark the return to archaeological artefacts to the local community of Carrickmore through a joint project with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.

The artefacts, which are on display in The Patrician Hall in Carrickmore, were found following an archaeological excavation which took place in Altanagh in 1977.  The excavation, which involved members of the local community and local primary school children, unveiled a rich tapestry of historical artefacts that were later kindly donated by the landowner, Danny Kerr, to Fermanagh County Museum in 1995.  For many years these artefacts were located in Enniskillen Castle Museums before being showcased in the Rooftop Museum at Strule Arts Centre, Omagh.

In January 2023, Termonmaguirc Historical Society expressed a keen interest in the Altanagh collections and, following discussions with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, work commenced to return a selection of the large collection back to the community, just a few short miles from where they were originally discovered.

The event on Friday night was attended by a keen audience with Dr Adam Winstanley, a distinguished figure in the field of Archaeology, delivered a fascinating presentation that highlighted the importance and value of community-driven initiatives in preserving our shared history.

Speaking at the event, Vice Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor AnnMarie Donnelly, said:

“I am delighted that these important artefacts from the Altanagh excavations have bene returned to the local community of Carrickmore.  This will enable future generations to explore and enjoy their historic importance and connection to the area.

I am pleased that, since the items have been returned, dedication and enthusiasm of the Termonmaguirc Historical Society and I am confident that this will inspire others.

Projects such as this are an excellent example of how the Council can work with communities to help rediscover their heritage and ensure it is cherished by locals and visitors alike.”

The success of this project is testament to the partnership working by the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Termonmaguirc Historical Society to provide an opportunity to showcase the collection and improve access to and understanding of the artefacts for the local community, schools and visitors to the area.  It will also enable the preservation and promotion of this important aspect of local heritage.
