12th December 2024

ColoursOfCulture2024 35[1]

The ‘Colours of Culture’ exhibition recently opened at the Ardhowen Theatre, featuring Highland Dance and Irish Dance as its focal points. This initiative is part of a Cross Cultural Celebrations programme funded by The Executive Office District Council Good Relations Programme (DCGRP) and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of cultural heritage within the district.
Highlighting the dynamic Irish and Highland dance scenes, the exhibition showcases young people honouring their cultural heritage while appreciating and respecting that of others. The photographs blend traditional costumes with a contemporary twist, demonstrating how these dance forms can adapt to modern settings while preserving their unique identity.
Images were taken at various locations including Crom Estate, Gortin Glens Forest Park and the Ulster American Folk Park, emphasising the district’s distinctive landscapes and its rich cultural heritage.

Speaking at the launch event Cllr John McClaughry Chair Fermanagh and Omagh District Council said,

‘We are all part of a rich cultural tapestry, and the young people featured in the exhibition are proud to show their culture in dance form and share it with others. Through the art of dance, they have excellently captured Irish and Highland dancing in both the traditional and modern context. I would like to thank the young people for their participation and enthusiasm and to the dance schools and photographer for their support and commitment.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to promoting equality and good relations for all and this exhibit helps us to achieve this. The involvement of youth is important as they have the energy and interest to bridge gaps and promote cultural respect’.

The exhibition will remain at the Ardhowen Theatre until 9 January before touring the district throughout 2025.
