Council and Safefood host free food safety workshops for businesses

Food Safety Event 1

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Environmental Health Department and Safefood, a government organisation that promotes food safety on the island of Ireland, recently hosted two free food safety workshops for small food businesses.

On Tuesday 21st May in Omagh and Wednesday 22nd May in Enniskillen, over 30 small businesses attended workshops to learn more about safe food practices. At the workshops, Safefood representatives provided up-to-date training on pest control, controlling food poisoning bacteria, cleaning and sanitation, managing food safety hazards, record keeping and labelling food allergens.

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, commented on the food safety workshops and the quantity of businesses in the district with the highest food hygiene rating, saying,

“83% of businesses registered with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have a 5-star rating within the scope of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This is a testimony that we as a Council are committed to ensuring that the food and drink produced or consumed within the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council area is safe, healthier and more sustainable.

I’d like to thank our colleagues in Safefood and our Environmental Health Officers for providing these two informative food safety workshops for businesses to have free training to assist their food businesses. The event also provided local businesses with the opportunity to engage with experienced food safety trainers and our Environmental Health Officers and network with other food businesses in the area.”
