Council Chair hosts a reception for Girls Allowed from Newtownbutler
14th May 2024
Recently the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, hosted as reception for Girls Allowed from Newtowbutler, a newly established group providing a range of activities for women in the Newtownbutler area.
The following is the speech delivered by the Chair at the reception.
Good evening ladies and gentlemen
As Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I am delighted to welcome you all to The Townhall, Enniskillen for this reception in honour of Girls Allowed, Newtownbutler.
I understand the Group was established in September 2023 with the aim of promoting personal development, positive mental health and physical activities for the benefit of women in and around the Newtownbutler area.
The group has successfully attracted a large membership of approximately 90 which is highly commendable in a rural area.
Girls Allowed provides a safe and happy environment where women can come together to advance health and wellbeing and learning through hobbies and interests, new skills, promoting women’s health and wellbeing, providing mentoring to young women and making new friends.
Community Groups are a vital element in any town or village as they help to ensure the community is connected and resilient. They are particularly important in our rural areas where the opportunities to participate in social activities may be more limited.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to ensuring that our people are healthy and well physically, mentally and emotionally and groups such as Girls Allowed help to achieve this.
I would like to commend Nicki Conlon and those involved in taking the initiative to establish the group and I hope other rural areas across the District will be inspired by your success and establish groups in their areas.
On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and on my own behalf, I would like to commend you on your work and what you have done in Newtownbutler and I wish you every success for the future.
Thank you.
