Council Chair welcomes the announcement to progress the A5 Western Transport Corridor Project
2nd October 2024
The Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor John McClaughry, has welcomed the decision by the Northern Ireland Executive to approve the A5 Western Transport Corridor (WTC) project.
Speaking after the announcement by the Minister for Infrastructure, Mr John O’Dowd MLA, Councillor John McClaughry said:
“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has been committed to seeing the delivery of the A5 Western Transport Corridor project for many years.
The Council has lobbied both Northern Ireland Executive Ministers and the Irish Government and has also worked collectively with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Mid Ulster District Council, Donegal County Council and Monaghan County Council through the A5-N2 Cross Border Committee to call for the delivery of improvements and upgrades to the A5.
The A5 Western Transport Corridor will deliver positive benefits to the Omagh area and the wider sub-region with improved connectivity, reduced travel time, increased opportunities for investment and economic growth and improved road safety.
Sadly, too many lives have been lost since 2007 on the A5 and many more have been injured as a result of road traffic accidents. Whilst today’s announcement is positive, our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones or were injured.
The Council looks forward to seeing the work commence on site and the realisation of benefits for residents, businesses, visitors and the wider region.”
