Learning Disabilities Week

To mark Learning Disability Week which takes place this year from 14 to 20 June, Fermanagh & Omagh District Council has launched a new project to encourage anyone with a learning disability to showcase their creative skills.

As this year’s theme is ‘Art and Creativity’, the Council is inviting children, young people and adults with a learning disability to send in a story, poem or picture or a combination of all three, around the topic of Summer. It can be about upcoming activities, the weather, animals, family and friends, indeed anything that you want to write or draw about.

To highlight the contributions from participants, the Council plans to exhibit the submissions on it’s social media channels.

Commenting on the programme, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson said;

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is delighted to launch this excellent creative project for children, young people and adults with learning disabilities.

Throughout the pandemic, people with various disabilities have been asked to isolate, preventing them from taking part in activities which they would normally. For this reason and because creativity is something that many of us love to explore, the Council welcomes the chance to provide an opportunity for people to express their ideas and for their creations to be publicised for others to enjoy.

By encouraging people to take part and have fun, the Council hopes to raise awareness of Learning Disability Week 2021. It is important that we continue to support inclusivity and highlight the achievements of all our residents.

I hope you take part in the project and I look forward to enjoying your stories, poems and pictures soon.”

To find out more information on the project or to take part please contact Fermanagh and Omagh District Council by telephone on 0300 303 1777 or visit the Council website at www.fermanaghomagh.com to download the story, poem or picture template. The closing date for entries is 5 pm on Friday 2 July 2021.
