Fermanagh Senior Hurling Lory Meagher Cup Champions Reception (1)

Recently the Vice Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Elaine Brough, hosted a reception for the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Team who won the 2024 Lory Meagher Cup.

The following is a copy of the speech  made by the Vice Chair at the reception:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen

As Vice Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I am delighted to welcome you all here to the Townhall, Enniskillen for this reception in honour of the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Team, the Lory Meagher Cup Champions 2024.

Your Lory Meagher campaign began on 13 April 2024 against Leitrim in Round 1 where you started off the competition with a 7 point win.  Round 2 saw you take on a strong Cavan side with the match ending in a draw.  On 28 April 2024 your opponents were Warwickshire in Round 3 and you very convincingly won by 26 points.

The next match was against Lancashire which you won by 6 points before you met Longford on 18 May 2024 in your last group match.  Your strong performances in the group matches earned you a place in the final where you once again met Longford.

All roads led to Croke Park on 02 June 2024 for the final.  In understand both teams started strongly, however, you were the first to get points on the scoreboard scoring after just 40 seconds.  This strong start was to prove pivotal in the match as your confidence, skill and determination grew during the game.  Even a disallowed goal didn’t deter you as you continued to play at your best and you claimed the title of Lory Meagher Champions 2024 with a score of 3-22 to 2.20.

Fermanagh is one of the teams to have competed the most in the competition since it started in 2009.  This win is the 3rd title for Fermanagh and you now join Louth as one of the most successful counties int eh competition.

Hurling requires speed, agility, balance and co-ordination as well as good skills in communication, being a team player and being resilient.  You all demonstrated these skills to a high level as you deservedly enjoyed success this year.

I would like to commend the Manager, Joe Baldwin, and the backroom team for all your work to train the players and ensure they were match fit for every game and for training.  I want to thank you for giving of your time to training the team and share your knowledge and skills to enable the players to enjoy unforgettable moments like this.

I commend each and every player for the skills you demonstrated on the pitch to win the Lory Meagher Cup but also on your commitment to training.  Being successful as a sports team requires hours of training and this can be challenging as you have work, family and personal commitments as well.

On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and on my own behalf, I congratulate the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Team Manager, Players and all involved in any way on winning the Lory Meagher Cup 2024.  I wish you every success for the future and as you compete this year in the Nicky Rackard Cup.  You have all done your family and friends, your clubs, your county and your District proud and I am confident that you will be an inspiration to the next generation of hurling players in Fermanagh.

Thank you.
