A talk exploring the early history of the Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital took place recently at the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh. Delivered by Dr. Johnny Hamill, the event traced the hospital’s origins from its establishment in 1853 through its development in the early 20th century.

The sold out talk examined the hospital’s transformation, from its early days as the ‘Omagh District Lunatic Asylum’ led by Dr. Francis J. West, into a pioneering mental health facility. Those in attendance heard stories of its staff and patients, daily life within the institution, its architectural significance and how the hospital played a key role in the region’s medical history. The building itself was designed by William Farrell, also known for Enniskillen Gaol.

The talk also shed light on broader social and medical changes that shaped mental health care, offering intriguing insights into the therapeutic environment created within the hospital. Facilities such as a library, brass band, cricket ground, farm, and woodland walks illustrated a progressive approach to patient care.

Reflecting on the event, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor John McClaughry, stated:

“It is wonderful to see such strong community engagement with our local heritage. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to valuing and enhancing access to the rich and diverse heritage of our District and providing opportunities for people to reminisce, share stories, and reconnect with memories of the past allows us to achieve this.

The history of the Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital is a vital part of our District’s story and the overwhelming response to this sold out event highlights the continued importance of preserving and sharing local stories, ensuring they remain part of the collective memory for generations to come.’
