Fermanagh and Omagh achieves Fairtrade status once again!

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is delighted to reveal that the district has retained its Fairtrade status.

Having attained Fairtrade status for the first time in 2020, this recognition reflects the district’s continued commitment to supporting Fairtrade and raising awareness of the many benefits that it brings to farmers and workers in developing countries.

Fairtrade is a system of certification which aims to ensure that a set of standards are met in the production and supply of a product or ingredient. For farmers and workers, Fairtrade means workers’ rights, safer working conditions and fairer pay. For shoppers it means high quality, ethically produced products.

There are over 1.9 million farmers and workers across more than 71 countries participating in Fairtrade.  Locally we can play our part in supporting these farmers and workers by looking out for and choosing products with the Fairtrade mark such as tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas.

Speaking on the announcement, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Barry McElduff, commented:

“The Council acknowledges the significant contribution that Fairtrade makes to sustainable development, tackling poverty and to improving the lives of people from some of the most disadvantaged communities in the developing world.

We are pleased to support the Fairtrade campaign by raising awareness of Fairtrade and the positive contribution that this movement is making to the lives of farmers and workers in the developing world.”
