Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to illuminate Enniskillen Castle and Strule Arts Centre for charitable causes throughout March

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will light up Enniskillen Castle and the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh on various dates in March to support and raise awareness for a number of important charitable causes.

On Saturday 01 March 2025 buildings were illuminated in purple for Brain Tumour Awareness Month. This campaign highlights the work of Brainwaves NI, a charity supporting those affected by Brain Tumours and funding research alongside Queens University in Belfast. With just 1% of cancer research dedicated to brain tumours – despite the fact that more people under 40 die from them than any other cancer. This initiative aims to draw attention to the urgent need for better treatment and support.

International Women’s Day takes place on Saturday 8 December and Strule Arts Centre and Enniskillen Castle will light up in purple. This globally recognised day celebrates the achievements of women in all aspects of life, promotes gender equality and calls for action against discrimination and inequality. Sunday 9 March is COVID-19 Day of Reflection 2025, honouring those who lost their lives during the pandemic, recognising the sacrifices frontline workers and reflecting on the resilience shown throughout the pandemic. St. Patrick’s Day festivities take place in Omagh and Enniskillen on Monday 17 March and buildings will light up in green, in recognition of the globally celebrated event. On Friday 21 March, the illuminations turn blue in recognition of World Down Syndrome Day. This global awareness day encourages people to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and wellbeing of those with Down syndrome, ensuring that their voices are heard and their contributions to society are valued.

Later in the month on Wednesday 26th March marks Epilepsy Awareness Day, also known as Purple Day and council buildings will light up purple. This international grassroots movement is dedicated to increasing understanding of epilepsy, reducing stigma, and supporting those living with the condition.
