‘Northern Ireland Through Our Eyes’ – A Unique Cultural Fusion Exhibition at Strule Arts Centre
5th March 2025

The opening of the captivating cultural fusion exhibition, Northern Ireland Through Our Eyes, presented by the Bulgarian Association of Northern Ireland (B.A.NI) took place recently at Strule Arts Centre. The exhibition showcases a stunning blend of Bulgarian folk heritage against the iconic landscapes of Northern Ireland and is free to view until Saturday 29 March.
This year-long artistic project, fully funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, celebrates diversity and cultural exchange. The exhibition features a striking collection of professional photographs capturing Bulgarian folk dancers in vibrant traditional costumes from various Bulgarian regions, set against Northern Ireland’s most cherished landmarks.
Dancers from B.A.NI’s own folk dance club, Chemshir, generously dedicated their time and passion to bring this unique project to life. The breathtaking imagery, expertly captured by photographer Anita Hoppe, was taken at Queen’s University and Botanic Gardens in Belfast, Palace Demesne and St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh, Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh, and Dunluce Castle in Bushmills. These locations provide a picturesque backdrop, symbolising the rich cultural connections between the two communities.
Vice Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Elaine Brough attended the launch and said,
‘This is an excellent example of cultural fusion as it brings together the traditions and culture of Bulgaria with the beauty and culture of the North of Ireland; a place where many Bulgarian natives now call home. The Bulgarian Association aims to support and inspire its members to achieve improved self-confidence and national pride, and participate more fully in the society here to enrich the local community. This exhibition is the epitome of this aim.
The Council is committed to working in partnership to create opportunities for participation; supporting greater inclusion; and understanding and valuing the diverse and dynamic cultural heritage in our District. I am pleased that we have been able to host this exhibition here in Strule Arts Centre to provide an opportunity to encourage everyone to embrace new perspectives and influences whilst also helping us to achieve this objective.”
B.A.NI member Roumena Kostadinova shared the vision behind the project, stating:
“This project aims to highlight the beauty of Bulgarian culture and traditions, and the participants’ passion for them, as well as the outstanding beauty and culture of this emerald island, which they now call home; a most wonderful expression of a of meaningful cultural interaction.”
The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday, 28 February to Saturday, 29 March 2025, running Monday to Saturday, 9:30am – 5pm. Admission is free.
