Recycle Week: Fermanagh and Omagh District Council joins The Big Recycling Hunt
16th October 2023
Now in its 20th year, Recycle Week is the UK’s biggest annual celebration of recycling.
The Big Recycling Hunt, the theme of this year’s Recycle Now Campaign, aims to shine a bright spotlight on “forgotten favourites” – the lost recyclables that too often find their way into the green or black landfill bin. By focussing on commonly forgotten items such as empty aerosols, plastic cleaning product bottles, plastic toiletry bottles, plastic pots and tubs and food tins, we want the whole family to get involved to foster a deeper understanding of recycling in the younger generation.
This Recycle Week, we are teaming up with Binovation Ltd to run a competition with the chance of winning an Android tablet. To enter the competition, download the Bin-ovation App from the App Store of Google Play, complete the Recycling Quiz on the App, get all the answers correct and email a screenshot of your Council area along with contact details to enquiries@bin-ovation.com.
Speaking about Recycle Week, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:
“Recycling doesn’t have to be confusing. By downloading the Bin-ovation App, you have access to a searchable database of 100s of household items to check which bin you should dispose of it in.
I would like to thank all our residents who are keen recyclers and encourage you to continue with your efforts. The Council has recycling targets to achieve, therefore, we can all play our part by ensuring that we recycle the right items and remember to ensure they are Clean, Dry, Empty and Flat.
I would encourage everyone of all ages to join The Big Recycling Hunt and see what you can recycle during Recycle Week. It is important that we encourage the next generation to continue to recycle and protect our environment.”
We will be supporting Recycle Week by highlighting the items which are commonly forgotten about when it comes to recycling as well as how to recycle right and our CDEF Recycling Campaign.
We are also on the Big Hunt to find our most active community group in the District who are taking action to Recycle and Reuse. Send us the name of the group and the actions you are taking to climateteam@fermanaghomagh.com.
Harriet Lamb, CEO of WRAP, said:
“The importance of the Recycling Week initiative extends beyond the week. By empowering children with the knowledge and tools to become recycling advocates, we are not only nurturing the future but also ensuring a healthier and more sustainable world for all. Join us in celebrating Recycle Week and empowering the next generation of environmental champions!”
