Rediscovering the past at “Remembering and Reflections”

Last week marked the conclusion of a six-week programme workshops at the Strule Arts Centre, bringing participants together to explore memories of the past through themes of fashion, traditional games, music, film, rural life, and photography. Delivered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council with support from Public Health Agency and South West Age Partnership, “Remembering and Reflections” allowed participants to reminisce on the past and on the heritage of the area.

Over 40 participants engaged in interactive discussions and hands-on activities that brought history to life. From recalling the joy of childhood games to tracing the evolution of local fashion, the workshops provided a unique opportunity to rediscover the district’s rich heritage while building new relationships. The programme’s success was further enriched by the collaboration of local individuals, organisations, and heritage experts, whose knowledge and resources added depth and authenticity to each session.

Councillor John McClaughry, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, praised the initiative, stating:

The workshops highlighted the power of reminiscence as a tool for fostering connection, community pride, and well-being, particularly among older generations. Through laughter, storytelling, and shared experiences, participants celebrated their past while strengthening ties to their community. This programme commenced in October as part of Positive Ageing Month, a month-long campaign of events activities and programmes that promote positive ageing, as well as celebrating the contribution older people make to their communities.
