Statement in relation to investigation into complaint regarding a humming noise in Omagh town

13th June 2024

An update report in relation to an investigation conducted by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Environmental Health Service, to identify a noise source following complaints about a humming noise in Omagh town, was presented to the Council’s Regeneration and Community Committee on Tuesday 11 June 2024.

The Council’s Environmental Health Service first received a complaint from a member of the public in August 2023 about a ‘humming’ noise in Omagh and received a further 10 complaints over the course of the investigation (August 2023 to April 2024).

A thorough and detailed investigation to identify the noise source was undertaken which included the Environmental Health Service working with a specialist noise consultant.

A particular industrial premises was identified following a targeted screening exercise, however, when further noise monitoring was carried out at the premises, no conclusive evidence was obtained to match the specific noise tone identified from previous recordings.

Complainants have also since advised Environmental Health Officers that the humming noise is no longer audible.

This noise complaint remains open and will be subject to review by the Council’s Environmental Health Service over the coming months.

The investigation was undertaken within the Environmental Health Service operational budget. No additional costs were incurred as a result of the investigation.

Further information on the investigation is available within the report presented to committee, available from the Council meetings section of the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council website.
