Motion: International Women’s Day

Council Meeting - 4th March 2025

International Women's Day is celebrated every year on the 8th March. It celebrates women's achievements, raises awareness of gender inequalities and promotes women's rights worldwide.

On the 50th anniversary of its official commemoration by the United Nations, FODC acknowledges the 50 years of significant changes for women, including participation in the workplace, legislative reforms and an increasing awareness of gender based violence.

 However FODC are aware that despite these five decades of advancement, women still continue to face systemic barriers including;

  • Unequal pay
  • Discrimination, especially against black and migrant women, women who live with disabilities and trans women
  • Insufficient support for childcare
  • Domestic violence and abuse
  • Sexual harassment
  • Period poverty
  • Women's health issues

 Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will continue to work with all agencies to help break down these barriers.
