Motion: Cost of Living Crisis
Council Meeting - 1st April 2025
That Fermanagh and Omagh District Council recognises that the cost of living crisis continues to have a deep impact on workers, families and the most vulnerable in our society.
We also acknowledge that the planned cuts announced by the British Government to the Welfare System are an attack on the most vulnerable in our society and we must stand together to oppose them.
FODC notes with concerns that since coming into power, the British Government have already made drastic cuts such as the Winter Fuel Payment that negatively impacted on so many.
So, in voicing our opposition to these draconian cuts
FODC will publicly outline our opposition, as the voice of the citizens of our council area,
We will also write to the British government outlining our opposition and calling for them to reverse their decision.
We will also actively engage with groups and organisations that work in the field to give public expression to our opposition to these cuts.
Furthermore, this Council commits to writing to the First and Deputy First Minister asking them to lobby the UK Government to reverse changes that will negatively impact vulnerable people.
And this Council commits to writing to the Minister for Communities to prepare, with the support of Executive colleagues a business case for a mitigation package which provides protections for current and future claimants from reductions in social security entitlements outlined in the Pathways to Work Green Paper.
