Age Friendly

Age Friendly as a concept was conceived by World Health Organisation in 2005. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council were accepted as a member of WHO’s Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC) in September 2019.

An Age Friendly district encourages active ageing.   Fermanagh and Omagh District Council are committed to providing an Age Friendly District and seek to ensure that older people lead more independent, engaged and socially connected lives.

It is often said that to plan for the young excludes the old but to plan for the old includes everyone and it is this ethos that drives Age Friendly.

The WHO seeks to support Age Friendly environments under the eight themes seen on the flower. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is also a member of the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities (UK Network) since March 2020. The UK Network supports the World Health Organisation’s mission and aims to stimulate and enable UK cities and communities to become increasingly age-friendly and is supported by the Centre for Ageing Better.

Fermanagh Omagh District Council is also a member of the Age Friendly Network NI which aims to promote the Age Friendly ethos and support practitioners in the 11 local councils across Northern Ireland to advance Age Friendly planning and practices.
